latest on the first of a series of storms targeting the bay area. you told us it was going to come. >> this is impressive in some parts of the bay area especially in the north bay. that rain really coming down today as a strong is sliding through with strong gusty winds. hi-def hi-def doppler showing you as it slipped on by now beginning to fall apart somewhat but still plenty of pockets of rainfall out there and some of that heavier amounts of rainfall. we take you toward the east bay. north to concord we continue to see showers in that direction and oakland. we are looking at more showers. spotty showers toward the afternoon. but the rainfall totals very, very impressive. how about this, 6" even at venado. santa rosa over one inch. 1.5" in st. helena, less in the south but there's plenty more to come. we'll talk about that coming up. it's already a busy travel week, but the weather will not

make it easy for americans to get home for the holidays. >> cbs 5 reporter cate caugiran is live at sfo, where dozens of flights have already been canceled. >> reporter: good afternoon. actually, the count now is at 60. that's right. 6-0 flights have been canceled out of sfo. and depending on how this storm pans out, we could see more along the way. >> just be a drag to be stuck here like this close to christmas. >> reporter: flyers are out in full force today. the busiest travel day of the holiday season. >> we tried to catch a very early bart train from berkeley where we live but it's pretty crowded. >> reporter: 130,000 people are expected to pass through sfo including the big guy himself. >> well, i'm going around to various airports to talk to the traffic controllers and meet with the airline pilots to make sure they don't freak out when they see anything on christmas eve. >> reporter: santa and our

holiday hopefuls are battling longer lines and mother nature. dozens of flights have been canceled because of a slow- moving storm. the airport doesn't anticipate more but they say delays are on the way. >> on a day like today when it's a busy travel day, there's not a lot of empty flights that could be canceled. so in most cases, airlines will continue to run most of their flights. >> reporter: we're told most delays and cancellations will be along the west coast. this woman and her husband are flying to eugene, but she sees this potential setback as an opportunity. >> actually, i'm really excited because we're hoping they will ask for volunteers because there are a lot of overbooked flights. >> reporter: midwest got unwanted airport quality time thanks to a storm in the region this week canceling almost 500 flights there. but don't worry, there's one thing that won't be. >> a lot of people want to know despite the weather, will santa be able to make his deliveries this year? >> oh, absolutely. rudolph is set. and indeed, the air force is very helpful to provide and

$200. a package thief caught on hidden camera swiping holiday gifts off a porch has been busted. 39-year-old daniel price stole a box from a house in concord just 15 minutes after u.p.s. had dropped it off, according to police. this is a picture of him walking up to the door. these photos were posted online three days ago. police did then get tons of tips. they say they searched price's home and found the stolen presents. other bay area headlines, take a look at the fiery end of a police chase in antioch over nice. officers were trying to stop two suspects who robbed the bonfair market on 10th street at about 1:00 this morning. one suspect was arrested after the crash. the second is on the run. a hit-and-run crash in san francisco has turned deadly. four people were hit as they walked in the twin peaks area about 9:00 last night. three people were thrown about 30 feet down a him side. a woman in her 50s died from her injuries early this morning. the car was found a short time

later. police say the driver a 23-year- old woman was drunk. she was arrested along with two men in the car who were also drunk. the nation paid tribute with a moment of silence and bell ringing this morning for the victims of last friday's shooting at a connecticut americans. across the country bells rang 26 times at 9:30 in the morning exactly 7 days since the shooting occurred in memory of the 26 people killed at the school. meanwhile, the national rifle association is talking for the first time since the shooting in newtown, connecticut. cbs reporter danielle nottingham reports from washington. >> reporter: the national rifle association faced the media for the first time since the deadly school shooting in connecticut. >> now we must speak for the safety of our nation's children. >> reporter: soon after nra's ceo wayne lapierre started

speaking, a protestor held up a sign. after the demonstrator was removed, lapierre said gun control is not the answer. >> the only thing that stops a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun. >> reporter: the nra is addressing the media here in washington under pressure to soften its stance on gun control. members of the public and the president are pushing for new restrictions on gun sales of a gun control petition on the white house website has received more than 400,000 signatures. >> we hear you. >> reporter: the president acknowledged the outpouring of support and he once again called on congress to pass new legislation. >> there's even one thing we can do as a country to protect our children we have a responsibility to try. >> reporter: the president has asked the nra to join a broad effort to reduce gun violence which includes looking at mental health care. but the white house is pushing for a bill that bans assault weapons.

chevron plans to move those spots to houston over the nt two years.. but the company does plan to keep i corporate headquarters in san ramon. th some 800 bay area jobs may move out of town. chevron plans to move 800 jobs

to houston but keep their headquarters in san ramon. california's jobless rate dipped below 10% last month for the first time in four years. we are down to 9.8%. that's from 10.1% in october. the last time the california's unemployment was in the single digits was way back in january of 2009. lawmakers are leaving for christmas without a plan to avoid the so-called "fiscal cliff." the house speaker lost a late- night push to pass his own fix and now there's uncertainty about what happens next. tara mergener is in washington with the very latest. >> reporter: michelle, speaker boehner says he is eager to negotiate a deal with the president. but at this point, there is no agreement in sight and lawmakers are leaving town. house speaker john boehner says now it's up to president obama and the democrats to steer the country away from the "fiscal cliff." >> unless the president and congress take action, tax rates will go up on every american

taxpayer and devastating defense cuts will go into effect in 10 days. >> reporter: one by one republicans came out of an emergency meeting thursday night. >> have a merry christmas. >> reporter: speaker boehner's plan b to avoid automatic tax hikes and steep spending cuts was dead before the house voted. >> are you guys leaving until after christmas? >> yes. >> why is that? >> we don't have the votes. >> reporter: boehner's bill would have extended the bush- era tax rates for households making up to a million dollars a year. he pushed it after rejecting an offer from the president that put the threshold at $400,000. even if speaker boehner had won enough support in his own party to pass plan b in the house, it would have failed in the senate. president obama also promised a veto and the white house said boehner's plan b just wasted time. >> it's a multiday exercise in futility at a time when we do not have the luxury of

exercises in futility. >> reporter: lawmakers are headed home for christmas, but both sides insist they are still committed to stopping the big tax hike that's coming january 1st. and the house will not meet again until after christmas. the senate will not reconvene until next thursday. in washington, i'm tara mergener, cbs 5. stocks opened sharply lower this morning with no deal in washington. the dow is downright now about 144 points. turns out the reports were true. president obama has nominated senator john kerry as his next secretary of state. >> today i'm looking ahead to my second term. and i'm proud to announce my choice for america's next secretary of state john kerry. >> the president made that announcement from the white house about 90 minutes ago. it's obama's first move in an expected overhaul of his national security team for his second term.

take a look at this. heavy rains caused a drain pipe to clog on highway 162 in mendocino county this morning. a semi was on the road when it gave way. its axle fell into the 30-foot hole and as you can see here, its trailer was stuck on the other side. amazing pictures. if you are heading to the sierra, bring your chains. the white stuff is already coming down. this is a live look from the caltrans camera along i-80 at donner lake. places above 5,000 feet should see three or four feet of snow before the storm is over. so you certainly want to take your time if you are heading up. >> a week ago we were at about 85% of average of snowfall. we have to be there by now with this system. >> i think by the time we get to this next point next week, we are going to be over that by far. we are seeing a lot of rain. the storms really lining up again, folks. hi-def doppler showing you the rainfall showing up this morning. and it continues right now. we're seeing another line of storms making its way into the north bay. if you are living in that direction toward inverness, watch out! you have some pretty good

stormy weather coming in your direction. nice train of moisture sliding in there, as well. we are going to see this type of activity all throughout the afternoon. more pop-up showers not that sustained line of rain like we had early on. of course, these storms generating some big-time surf at the coastline, swells up to 16 to 19 feet. high surf advisory in effect until tomorrow afternoon. scattered showers on and off throughout the day today. we may see a couple of sunny breaks. it will be windy at times. and then tonight, showers will continue probably becoming very heavy late tonight early tomorrow morning with a possibility of some isolated thunderstorms and a wet weekend all throughout the bay area, periods of rain on and off. the storm door once again open. this cold front opening that up early on moving on through, we are getting on the back side of this now and see all those clouds, they are beginning to enhance. there's a little low on the back side. we'll see heavy rain tomorrow morning. around the state you will see a

lot of rainfall, especially to the north not too bad in toward fresno about 60 degrees there. the high country you want to sneak up there be very, very careful. pack the chains. winter storm warnings up there could see upwards of 5 feet of snow across the higher peaks between now and monday morning. let's time it out. as the storm system moves through begins to fall apart a little bit more scattered showers throughout the afternoon. and then late tonight early- morning, here comes that line that i was showing you off the coastline. you could see some thunderstorms embedded, heavy rainfall about 6 a.m. strong storms moving through. then it breaks to showers for the better part of saturday. that will be on and off. and then another storm comes in as we head in toward sunday. so temperatures going to look like this as we head toward the afternoon going to keep you cool and soggy mainly in the 50s. the next couple of days, we are going to see the weather staying unsettled and wet right through the weekend. and, well, it looks like things could be a little bit wet into christmas day too. in fact, we are going to keep things partly cloudy with a
